Miraculous Saint Nicholas of Myra, Saint Nicholas the Wonderworker, gr. Άγιος Νικόλαος από τα Μύρα της Λυκίας, cs. Swiatitiel Nikołaj, archijepiskop Mirlikijskij, czudotworec (born c. 270 in Patara, Asia Minor, died c. 345 or 352) – Bishop of Myra in present-day Turkey. A saint of the Catholic and Orthodox Churches, where he is honored as Saint Nicholas the Wonderworker.
He became famous as a miracle worker, saving sailors and the city from famine. He demonstrated courage and justice by saving imperial officials unjustly sentenced to death.
According to legends, Saint Nicholas inherited a significant fortune from wealthy parents, which he gladly shared with the poor. He was distinguished by piety and mercy. The residents of Myra elected him as their bishop. After a life full of zeal and good deeds, he died in the mid-4th century, venerated spontaneously by the faithful. Stories tell of three unjustly imprisoned officers freed through his intercession; of three poor maidens married thanks to dowries discreetly provided by the Saint; of three youths saved from execution; and sailors rescued from a shipwreck.
One of the shipwrecked crew members, who was being transported with the Saint on a pilgrimage to Jerusalem, was reportedly resurrected by him. Saint Nicholas also resurrected three young men killed for not settling their inn bill. When Myra was conquered by Arabs, Italian merchants managed to take his relics and transport them to Bari in southern Italy.
