How to arrange a living room in Provençal style?

Charming and lavender Provence has been inspiring for years to decorate living spaces in a rustic, almost vacation-like atmosphere. The rural idyll promotes relaxation, while light tones add elegance and chic. The simplicity of this style makes it incredibly easy to incorporate into your own interiors. Could there be a better recipe for styling a welcoming space where every moment is a pleasure to spend?

What characterizes the Provencal style?

Arrangements inspired by the Provencal style are bright, spacious, and extremely comfortable. Interiors are thus awash in whites, grays, or beiges, and enveloped in wood and soft materials that promote rest and relaxation. The French style, even when observed in the countryside, is also adorned with dignified notes of elegance, and perhaps this is one of the reasons why such a blissful idyll is successfully transferred to urban villas and apartments. In the Provencal style, natural wood takes the lead, both on floors, furniture, and accessories. Therefore, nothing stands in the way of introducing a bit more nonchalance and luxury into the interior with French herringbone flooring, which, along with an upholstered sofa and rounded armchairs, will create an impressive yet livable composition.

However, you can remain faithful to the rustic atmosphere and, in keeping with rustic influences, opt for raw, seemingly forest-scented wooden planks, which, along with aged sideboards or dressers, will create an interior with a tradition, as if meticulously collected over many generations. In a bright, light-filled setting, furniture with a noble patina effect fits phenomenally, but if you like contrasts and want to add a bit more dynamism and stronger character to the interiors, then opt for darker shades of wood, which also fit perfectly in such climates.

How to arrange a living room in Provencal style?

In the Provencal style, simple and subdued colors like white, gray, or beige undeniably reign. However, it doesn't have to be monotonous, especially if you indulge in combinations with pastel or even more vivid tones. As in any style, not only is the color scheme important here, but also the accessories that fit the character of the interior and tastefully enhance its ambiance. This could be ceiling moldings, beveled fronts of a dresser, but also large mirrors or paintings and graphics displayed in simple wooden frames.

Provence is a place strongly scented with heather, olives, and forest, so don't be afraid of greenery in the interior and indulge in a few flower pots or vases. In an elegantly designed temple of relaxation and comfort, there must also be soft rugs, throws, and cushions, which will not only add a homely aura to the entire interior but also provide more warmth and coziness in the living room.

Comfort under the Provencal sign – which sofa to choose?

The key to creating a relaxing and comfortable area in the living room is undoubtedly the sofa. Soft, comfortable, and kept in light tones, it will be a phenomenal decoration for the interior, as well as a place where you can enjoy an evening or Sunday afternoon with your closest ones. In such arrangements, rounded upholstered armchairs also work well. They can proudly accompany the sofa or replace it – everything depends on the layout of the relaxation area and the size of the interior. Although Provençal style adheres to strict discipline in terms of color choice, when it comes to upholstered furniture, you can go a bit wild and opt for darker, even more vivid colors. Delicious caramel, fresh turquoise, and even pink in a strong fuchsia shade can masterfully accentuate this most important area in the living room, while also adding a bit of edge. If you are looking for more subdued colors, follow the path of established conventions and choose grays, beiges, or whites. Pastels can also be a compromise – dusty pink, light green, or sunny yellow.

Lighting in a Provençal Living Room – Chandelier or Globe Lamps?

Light colors, consistently repeated on walls, furniture, or decorations, are meant to bring a lot of calmness to the interior, but also optimally illuminate it. Light, both natural and artificial, plays a dominant role in such a setting, so there should be an abundance of it in the living room. In an interior steeped in tones of exclusivity and elegance, a candelabra-type chandelier will fit perfectly. However, you can choose the path of modern elegance or classic simplicity and opt for more subtle-looking chandeliers with lampshades or classic hanging lamps in white, silver, or wood. Additionally, wicker woven or fabric lamps will also suit this idyllic atmosphere. It is worth mentioning that in a Provençal living room, standing lamps and wall sconces beautifully present themselves, being the proverbial "dot over the i" in the entire setting, while also building the mood, including a more romantic or nostalgic one in the evening.

What Colors Highlight the Provençal Atmosphere?

The magical corner of southern France undoubtedly paints itself in memory with the calm colors of the blue sky, heather purple, sunny yellow, or olive green. It is worth bowing to these colors when arranging the interior, as they pleasantly soothe and positively uplift like no others. Let the base of the arrangement be created from calm and subdued colors, such as ecru, off-white, or gray, but let the accessories reflect olive groves, heather fields, or a clear, cloudless sky. However, you don't have to limit yourself to monochromatic accessories. Floral or patterned accents are also recommended, which, when displayed on pillows, throws, or paintings, will add the desired energy to the interior and pleasantly brighten it up.
